ReShare can be configured to work with your local library management system (LMS) using the NCIP protocol and other APIs. This page provides an overview of the process for configuring an LMS integration.

Configure host LMS integrations

Host LMS integration settings tell ReShare which LMS you are using and which integrations are active.

ReShare currently supports four points of integration via NCIP and similar protocols.

  1. Accept item: When an item is received by the requesting library, ReShare will create a temporary record in the LMS and place a hold for the requesting patron.

  2. Borrower check: When a new request is placed, ReShare will look up the patron in the LMS to ensure that they have a valid account.

  3. Check in item: When a request is completed, ReShare will will check in the item in the LMS.

  4. Check out item: When a request is filled, ReShare will check out the item in the LMS to an institutional patron account.

To configure:

  1. Set the host LMS integration. This is the name of the LMS used by your library.

  2. Set the method for each integration.

    1. If you select “NCIP,” the integration will be active.

    2. If you select “None,” the integration will be inactive.

Configure NCIP settings

NCIP settings provide ReShare with the information it needs to interact with your LMS. You will need to perform local setup activities in your LMS before it can work with ReShare. Please see the detailed documentation for your LMS for more information, or contact your LMS vendor.

There are a number of settings that support NCIP, and each LMS uses these settings differently. If a setting is not required for your LMS, you may leave it blank. Please see the detailed information page for your LMS for more details about required fields.

Configure institutional patron IDs

If you are using the “Check out item” integration, you will need to provide one or more institutional patron identifiers. ReShare will tell your LMS to check out the item to this patron account. The institutional borrower represents an institution or an interlibrary loan program, rather than an individual.

Note: Alma does not require an institutional patron ID because it will check out items to a resource sharing partner configured within the system.

Configure Z39.50 settings

ReShare uses Z39.50 to access real-time availability information about items in your LMS.

To configure this setting:

  1. Determine your Z39.50 server address.

    1. This address should follow the pattern: https:// + Z39.50 host: + Z3950 port/ + Z39.50 base.

    2. Example: https://youruniversity.yourLMS.com:1921/INST_CODE.

  2. Add this address to the Z39.50 server address field.

Note: OCLC’s WorldShare Management Services does not natively support Z39.50. Please contact your service provider for options to real-time availability checking in WMS.

Configure auto-responder

The auto-responder uses the Z39.50 service to check for availability when a request is assigned to your library as a supplier. You must choose an option for the types of responses you wish to send.
